A therapy session is a private meeting between a therapist and a client focused on discussing personal thoughts, emotions, and experiences. It provides a safe, respectful space to talk about challenges, gain insight, and develop strategies for coping and growth. The therapist listens, asks questions, and helps the client explore new perspectives or approaches to improve well-being and resilience.

But now, reading her books, she was beginning to find a different kind of love. A love that came from inside her, one she felt when she was all alone, reading by the window. And through this love, she was beginning to believe, for the first time in her life, that maybe she was worthy after all.”

Empowerment and Growth

Coming to counselling can feel like a big step, and it’s completely okay to feel a bit unsure at first.

Life can be hard sometimes—it throws curveballs our way. Some challenges are tricky to navigate, some take our breath away, and others simply feel sad.

Whatever brings you to seek support, I hope I can offer you a place where you can open up and share what you need to. I’m here to listen, to hear what you have to say, and to offer support. Being vulnerable isn’t easy—I know that. I feel it too. But you might be surprised by how much lighter you feel when you let some of the weight go.

Curious about starting therapy? Your first session is all about us getting to know each other. Share as much or as little as you like. No pressure, just a safe space for you.

1. What can I expect in my first session?

Your first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. I’ll ask about what brings you to counselling and what you’d like to get out of it. we will carry out an informal assessment to better understand your current difficulties and presenting concerns. There’s no pressure — it’s simply a space for you to share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with.

2. How long are the sessions and how often do we meet?
Sessions last up to 1 hour 30mins. Many people choose to meet weekly, but we can discuss what feels right for you and your needs.

3. Is everything I say confidential?
Yes, what you share in counselling stays between us. The only exceptions are if I’m concerned about your immediate safety, or the safety of someone else. I’ll always talk this through with you.

4. Do I need to prepare anything before starting counselling?
No preparation is needed. Just bring yourself. Some people find it helpful to jot down thoughts or situations they’d like to talk about, but that’s entirely up to you.

5. What is the difference between a psychologist, psychiatrist, psychotherapist and a counsellor?

Psychiatrist: Medical doctor, diagnoses and prescribes for mental health.
Psychologist: Assesses and treats mental health using evidence-based methods.
Psychotherapist/Counsellor: Provides talking therapies for stress and life challenges.

6. For teenagers (under 18): In this session, I will begin by meeting with both the parent/carer and child together before seeing each separately. This approach ensures that both have a voice in the process, allowing me to understand their perspectives and concerns. Following this, I will conduct an assessment with parents or carers to gather background history and explore presenting difficulties. Once counselling commences, regular consultations ensure that the young client's needs and goals are kept in mind. Discussions can address progress, areas of difficulty and practical strategies to support parents/ carers.
